Prevent material loss caused by scaling

Temperatures of over 1,000 °C are often measured in industrial processes. If raw materials, components or semi-​finished products are exposed to great heat during their processing, uncontrolled scaling occurs. If this is not removed, it can have a negative influence on subsequent work processes. In the worst case scaling results in material loss or waste, for example where deep scaling holes render rollers unusable. Resistant coating solutions offer long-​term scaling protection in this case.

Optimal scaling protection: DELTA-​HEAT®

DELTA-​HEAT®, developed by Dörken MKS, is suitable for use in areas with scaling. The silvery, water-​based coating contains aluminum and can be applied directly to components at various stages – for example prior to curing, annealing or hot stamping processes. The coating subsequently hardens at room temperature. Positive side effect: the coated components are also temporarily protected against corrosion following application. With the application of heat (up to a maximum of 1,200 °C) the high-​performance top coat comes into effect, with the aluminum flakes melting into the coating. They form a fixed layer that adheres to the substrate – an aluminum oxide. This inert protective coat prevents oxygen, which attempts to penetrate the material, from making its way to the substrate. This enables the oxidation and scaling formation there to be reduced by up to 80 percent.

Interesting information about scaling:

  • The emergence of scaling is primarily dependent on three factors: the heating process, the material and the heating temperature
  • Scaling never occurs solely on the surface, but also in depth
  • Depending on the quality of the steel and the molding process, the hot working of steel results in between 1 and 3 % scaling
  • The removal of the scaling via high-​pressure descaling is dependent on the class of materials
