Organic protective coatings

Organic protective coatings are coatings made of organic, highly polymeric substances and serve to shield metallic surfaces from a wide variety of corrosion media.

Organic protective coatings are produced by applying special coating materials (e.g. plastic coating powder) to the surfaces to be protected. These are usually applied in several steps by brushing, spraying, dipping or similar processes. Important properties of these coatings are their adhesion to the substrate (primer) and their resistance to chemical and mechanical stresses (top coat). An essential prerequisite for the best protection is impermeability to media such as moisture or acids. If pores are present in the surface, sub-rusting can begin from these points and the coating is destroyed. For this reason, several protective layers are applied, depending on the area of application, to ensure permanently effective corrosion protection. As a rule, such a coating system consists of a varying number of base, intermediate and top layers.
