Atomization during the spraying application results in only a portion of the applied coating material reaching the substrate of the component that is to be coated. The portion that is lost due to air rebound effects and spraying past the object is referred to as overspray.


Loss of material through overspray is dependent on substrate geometry, the application technology, and how it is handled. Unfortunately, overspray cannot be completely avoided, however, the loss of material can be significantly reduced via the latest low-​pressure spraying processes (HVLP) or through electrostatic-​supported processes.
